Are you stressed? I know, that’s like asking if there is ice at the North Pole! Let’s face it, no matter how great your life may be, chances are you deal with some kind of stress on a daily basis. Stress is a part of living in this fast-paced world and it’s something to recognize and deal with because it can and will impact your health negatively if not dealt with. There are many ways to help you relieve stress, but I wanted to share with you three easy steps that I have been including in my daily routine that has really made a difference. This is what I do:
Try to stretch at least 3-4 times per day. I stretch before I get out of bed. Yes, I stretch in bed! It makes it so much easier to get up and at ‘em! Second, I stretch before and after exercising, and finally, before I go to sleep at night. Stretching before bed really helps me to relax and I rest better. Check out YouTube for some excellent videos on stretching. I do a search on “stretching for stress relief”.
2. Deep Breathing
Breathing is, of course, necessary for life, and it happens automatically without conscious thought. But, unless you really think about it, the breaths you take can be on the shallow side and not the lung filling, oxygen-boosting powerhouses that will relax you. I find that deep breathing at least 3 times per day really calms me and helps me think more clearly. The best thing is that you can do this most anywhere. What you want to do is to breathe in deeply through your nostrils and really fill up your lungs, hold it for a quick count of three, and then forcefully expel it through your mouth. Repeat these steps 3 times. By the way, this is a great to do before a big meeting or a job interview. See if you don’t feel amazing afterwards!
3. Read Something Inspirational
Now, this can be whatever inspires you. I change material all the time, but here are some of my favorites:
- The Bible
- The Success Principles by Jack Canfield
- Zig Ziglar Blog at http://www.ziglar.com/blog
This does not have to take a lot of time. Just 15 minutes a day can give you a real mental boost. I have also found that doing this even has a positive effect on how I feel physically. I believe that where the mind goes, the body follows. Try it and see! You can also read more about this in my book, “The Wellness Mindset: 5 Keys to Building Super Health”. So, consider giving these three techniques a try. I’ll bet your stress level goes way down and that is always a good thing!
