I am often astounded by the things that people say about themselves. What’s interesting is that it’s usually from the perspective of someone else they know. For example, I’ll hear things like : I’m no good at public speaking or I don’t have the brains to do X or I’m not smart enough to do Y. When I ask where they got these ideas from, I am usually told that, oh, so and so told me this. Sometimes they even tell me it was someone close to them that said it! Yikes!
When did it become okay to let others define us or our limits? You might ask as you read this, what does this have to do with health? Well, it has plenty to do with health! As I mention in my book, The Wellness Mindset: 5 Keys to Building Super Health, where the mind goes the body follows. The way you see yourself, either positively or negatively, can and will influence how you feel physically. Internalizing limiting or negative opinions of yourself can contribute to stress in your life which is extremely detrimental to your health. So, we all need to become our own biggest fan!
Take Joan Rivers, the legendary comedienne, who died last year. It would be safe to say that she was a very polarizing figure, you either liked her or you didn’t. But I believe that her life had something to teach all of us. You see, throughout her long career, she never let people put her in a box. During her five decades in show business she had been told, among other things, not to say or do certain things because she was a woman. At the later part of her career, she was told that she was too old and should retire. Well, Joan Rivers didn’t let that stop her. She kept forging her own path, never listening to naysayers. She would say, “I’m going to walk through this door, the next door after that, and the door after that”. I think all of us can learn from that. Don’t let anyone’s opinion stop you. Only God knows all of the amazing gifts that are in you. If you let the opinions of others box you in, you run the risk of never realizing your full potential and missing great opportunities in life. Don’t settle, reach high! I encourage you today to go full bore at whatever dream that you have and do not let anyone or anything stop you. And while you’re at it, how about paying it forward and giving someone else some encouragement as they reach for their dream. Doing so will not only lift them up, but will also give you a lift as well.
